"inches of mercury"? or "in.Hg." The densest of metals-yet liquid. Mercury was
once widely used to measure varying atmospheric pressures before advances in
digital/electronic technology of today. In traditional barometers the movement of the
mercury in a marked column reflects pressure changes expressed in inches, the
"in." of "in.Hg". The "Hg" is the abbreviated Latin word for mercury "Hydrargyrum"(water-silver)
for the liquid metal. This liquid state is contradictory to the common perception of
solid metals in general creating a mysterious aura to all things "mercury". With a little research
the mysticism of mercury is very evident throughout history in science, astronomy,
physics and especially in the practice of "Alchemy"; in short, a primitive form of chemistry
approached from a spiritual standpoint rather than a scientific philosophy.
(for more on this google "alchemy") For the guys these ideas and the "liquid-metal"
metaphor was a fitting concept and an inspirational spring board for their craft.
Founded by Brandon Melton--"inches of mercury" strives to write from all sides
of the emotional spectrum, ebbing and flowing freely between subtle heart felt melody
and outright aggression and angst. Cleverly arranged and lyrically insightful
inches of mercury delivers a refreshing sound that is original yet somehow familiar.
